I was asked once in an interview, "Where does your love of the ocean come from?". Right there on the spot, I couldn't think of a quick answer. Over the next few days, I couldn't stop thinking about the question. I'd really never wondered "why" before. I just knew that I'd always loved the ocean and the creatures that live in it. Then one day out of the blue a voice in my head said, "It was those seahorses!".

I was born in a small town in Kansas and grew up in rural Oklahoma. Just about as far from any ocean as you can get. One day when I was about seven, I was reading an old copy of Field and Stream magazine that I had found and in the back in the classifieds was that little add that says "Live Seahorses". I ordered them and everyday I'd wait for the mail to arrive and run to check the mailbox. One day they finally came so I rushed right in and set up my little piece of the ocean right there in the middle of Oklahoma in an old one quart Mason jar. The seahorses were fascinating. I'd always had a big imagination and staring into that jar for hours and hours on end I thought of all the other strange and wonderful animals living in the ocean and the exotic places and adventures to be had.

The seahorses died after a week or so. I guess they missed their home, (or oxygen, maybe.) I was hooked, though, on my fantasies of the ocean and travel and adventure. While I was in school, I began to doodle and sketch my daydreams. Somewhere out there in Oklahoma there must be dozens of old math, english, and history books with curiously out of place drawings of islands, starfish, dolphins, and of course, seahorses, filling the margins of every page. And probably somewhere in somebodys garbage dump, an old one quart Mason jar that used to be the Atlantic Ocean.

I've since been fortunate enough to live my dreams. I've been to those places that I had dreamt of all those years ago. Whenever I find myself down on a coral reef somewhere it still takes my breath away. And, I'm still doodling and sketching my daydreams. Hopefully with my art now reaching so many different places and people around the world it can touch other people with big imaginations and fantasies of adventure.
